Why did the apostles suffer severe persecution?

All of the apostles died violent deaths. The apostle John was the only one to escape death at the hands of another. The reason the apostles died violent deaths is because they did not have a religion. According to Leo Rosten, author of "Religions of America", there are 79 denominations of religion in America. This is the result of religion without a gospel. Religion is mans effort to please God by what he has become or by what he does. Only Jesus Christ was pleasing to God. All the rest of us are sinners. We are sinners without works. This means we did not do anything to be come a sinner, we are born this way. We all have Adam's blood coursing through our veins. Religion says "do". The historical gospel of Jesus Christ says "Done". Regardless of what we do or what we become, we will not make ourselves righteous.

Jesus said to the apostles, "They shall put you out of the synagogues. Yes the time is coming when those who murder you will think they are doing service to God." - John 16:2
